In 2014, El Salmiya-3 was drilled and put into production from the AR-C reservoir, initially
at 1,100 bopd. The well failed to reach the deeper Kharita reservoir due to mechanical
problems while drilling. Production in March, 2014 was 1,520 bopd, essentially all from El
Salmiya, but it is planned to install SRPs in Al Jahraa-1 and ASA-1X in June/July, which
is expected to add between 250 bopd and 600 bopd in total.
Geologically Abu Sennan lies in the Abu Gharadig Basin in the Western Desert. Overall
stratigraphy is summarised in Figure 1.2. The proven reservoirs are Cretaceous in age
and lie at depths between 8,000 ft ss and 12,500 ft ss. They comprise a series of
interbedded marine sandstones and carbonates deposited on the southern Tethyan
passive margin. The Bahariya Formation and Abu Roash Members C, E, and G are of
Cenomanian to Turonian age and the Kharita Formation is of Albian age. Seals are
provided by interbedded marine mudstone units. The Middle Jurassic Khatatba
Formation provides the principal hydrocarbon source rock, although distribution and level
of maturity varies between fault blocks. GOR was very high in some of the initial
production tests and there was debate as to whether the hydrocarbons exist in the
reservoirs as volatile oil or gas condensate, although most have now been confirmed to
be oil.
The most significant field is El Salmiya, where the best estimates of STOIIP and GIIP in
the Kharita reservoir are approximately 20 MMBbl and 34 Bscf respectively with a further
5.3 MMbbl and 10 Bscf in other reservoirs. Al Jahraa is next largest with a best estimate
of STOIIP of 9 MMBbl in the AR-E reservoir, followed by ASA with best estimates of
STOIIP and GIIP of 7.5 MMBbl and 11 Bscf in the Lower Bahariya reservoir.
GCA has audited production profiles prepared by KE. Up to 17 new production wells are
planned be drilled in El Salmiya, Al Jahraa and ASA over the next 4 years (Table 1.1).
Four of these wells, including El Salmiya-4 and Al Jahraa-2, both of which were already
being drilled at end May, 2014, target Proved volumes but are uneconomic in the Proved
case so no Proved Reserves are attributed to them. El Salmiya-4 and El Salmiya-5 (also
planned for 2014) are both intended to be fitted with dual completions, to produce
simultaneously from the Kharita and Lower Bahariya reservoirs. Initial oil production
rates and decline rates for the new wells have been estimated using regional analogues
and recoverable volume estimates.

Notes:
1.
The above table shows development wells only, not exploration wells.
2.
The 2014 wells comprise 1 in Al Jahraa and 3 or 4 (depending on the case) in El Salmiya.
3.
The 2015 wells comprise 3 or 4 (depending on the case) in Al Jahraa, 2 or 3 (depending on the
case) in El Salmiya and 1 in ASA.
4.
The 2016 wells are all in ASA.
