appraisal well:
A well drilled as part of an appraisal drilling
programme which is carried out to determine the physical extent,
reserves and likely production rate of a field.

stratigraphic horizon known to be productive

Probable reserves:
reserves which analysis of geological and
engineering data suggests are more likely than not to be
recoverable
